The winter classic in hockey is a really cool tradition in NHL history. The winter classic is a game in New Years day. Two teams play in a baseball stadium. Or football. This year the winter classic is the Blackhawks vs the Blues in Chicago. But havee you every wonder how it started. It started because a Sports Executive VP Jon Miller had a crazy idea. To play a NHL outdoors. Like how Hockey started. It was originally just a joke. During the regulare season the only thiing you get if your team comes oon top is the Presidents Trophy. Then The playoffs start. The top 8 teams from the East and the West enter the Playoffs. Each seires is a best out of 7 seires games. But once one team from the East and the West are left, they play a best out of 7 seirse games to win the Stanley Cup. but have you ever wonder how it all started. In 1892 Lord Stanley Presond wanted to make a trophy for Canada's best hockey league. So he got one. Worth $50 back then. Back then the Stanley Cup was not called that. Then it was called the Dominion Cup. But the reason why it changed it's name was because the first tine a team won the cup was the Montreal Hockey Club. In and article about the MHC winning the cup, the person that wrote it didn't know what the troph was called. So he just called it the Stanley Cup because of Stanley Preston.
